QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

What is Judo?

Judo is a martial art, combat and olympic sport created in 1882 by Kanō Jigorō. With focus on randori (free-sparring), the goal of Judo is to beat your opponents by throwing them onto their backs, pinning them, or submitting them with chokes and arm locks.

See the IJF's quick guide to Judo video for a good summary of the fundamentals of Judo.

I am a beginner. Where do I start?

Beginners between the ages of 8 and 16 should come to the junior class on Thursday evening. Those aged 16+ are welcome to join either of our senior classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

For your first class wear comfortable clothing with no zips or attachments that could tear the mats, and indoor footwear for wearing off the mat. You will be provided with a 'Gi' jacket to wear.

Bring a bottle of water and a means of payment for your class, this is either paid via cash or bank transfer. Change will be available for those paying in cash.

How do I join the club?

All Judo players are welcome to train at the club. There are no contract or minimum terms and you can pay either per class, or per month.

The monthly option provides a small discount for juniors who attend weekly and for seniors who attend five or more classes a month.

Why do I need to join the BJA?

BJA membership provides comprehensive member insurance which includes both Personal Accident insurance and Public Liability insurance.

Membership also provides entry into BJA and Internation Judo Federation competitions and allows take part in the internationally recognised grading system. For more information on membership, see the 'Join BJA page' on the BJA website.

Please note: Recreational membership only provides insurance, and will not allow you to compete or take part in the grading system.

Am I too old for Judo?

Although Judo is a physically demanding sport, it is suitable for people of any age and many of our experienced club members started later in life and continue to train and compete in their 50s and 60s.

What is randori?

Randori (乱取り) is a japanese term which means free practise, or sparring. It is the time put your skills into practice and perfect your techniques against a resisting and attacking partner, without the pressure, intensity or urgency of competition.

Time for Randori is often included in most classes and we have a dedicated randori session on Saturday mornings for more experienced senior Judoka.
